A few days after the passing of “Super Storm” Hurricane Sandy which struck the East Coast of the United States of America this week, the country is currently struggling in its recovery process in the worst hit areas as businesses struggle to reopen and get life moving forward. The storm, which devastated the country after catching it off-guard with its severity, has currently left at least 90 people dead, thousands of people homeless and millions without power with the “worst hit” areas including New york City and New Jersey. Now, East coast USA prepares itself for a long, tedious and tiresome recovery process which will stem well into the 2013 New Year and beyond. According to a report from “Reuters” on November 1st, 2012, New York, which is largely still without power, had drivers queuing up for miles as they attempted to fill their cars with fuel. However, as fuel sources started to run dry, angry Manhattan dwellers, even those who had queued for hours, had to resort to taking the subway to work as a limited number of businesses opened their doors to get their employees back to work. However, a limited train service throughout the city, combined with a lack of fuel and a lack of power continues to wreak havoc on people getting from A to B and business returning to normal. The recovery process for the East Coast USA is said to be a long and strenuous one. While certain places, particularly those not close to the ocean, were hit slightly less in terms of damage and destruction, these areas still remain without power in their homes as Sandy laid waste to power lines connecting the city. Not everyone was as fortunate as those further inland however. Those closer to the ocean in some cases had their home and all their possessions completely destroyed leaving them homeless. In the same report from Reuters, one man, aged 59, described seeing everything he had worked for his entire life lying in a pile of rubble before his eyes. Blackouts throughout the East Coast leave people fearing for their lives come nightfall as security systems, street lamps and other precautionary measures to fight against crime are inactive. A heightened police force and emergency service aims to keep people feeling safe but for the most parts, people are staying indoors when the sun goes down until power resumes. The same report states that at least a quarter of a million have had their power restored by one energy provider, while the company works to restore almost a million of their other customers hit by the effects of Sandy. In one of the most devastating storms that the United States has ever seen, the death toll from the wrath of Hurricane Sandy continues to rise, as does the cost of repairing the damage caused by it also. The super storm, which has killed almost a hundred and left millions of people badly hit, was officially declared as “over” on Halloween 2012, but the effects of it are to be felt well into 2013 and beyond.
